"Dbird
A Dingwall bass inspired by one of the classic basses: the Thunderbird
Visually, it is true to the basic body shape, yet slimmer, more 3-D than the original, with the slim lightweight mahogany body painted in light metallic grey. The body is slightly curved on the top, while keeping flat and slightly raised the part that corresponds to the bridge (across the length of the body).
The lower wing has a rosewood veneer; very nice touch!
The strap pins are strategically placed for perfect balance. The "neck" one is placed on the middle of the body heel where it meets the neck (at 15th fret), while the "bridge" pin strap is placed in a recessed concave cavity in the back of the upper bridge horn. Tummy cut is nice and comfortable. The neck stays where one plays (from pointing upwards to horizontal) while playing it while sitting is very comfortable.
The headstock is a departure from the classic huge headstock (head dive to the max). Small slimlined 2+2 compact headstock with a great custom Dingwall logo on a nice thick rosewood veneer. The contours on the headstock offer a very classy look.
Neck is maple with rosewood fingerboard, with nice oval dots on the face of the board. Slim, comfortable and fast; 20 frets long. The truss rod is accessed from the body end (slot channeled on the neck side of the body).
Hardware is grey
Bass was 4str, B-D tuned. Even tension on all strings.
Trademark Dingwall playability across the board and stings.
Controls are volume, 4pos rotary and tone, on a straight line. Passive!!!
On the tone side of things, it is very different from other models.
Drawing from the bass of inspiration, It has a thick bottom to start with.
The 4pos rotary switch keeps levels very smooth across positions (#2 is not the loudest any more). Sheldon informed me that the wiring of the switch is based on Dan J Veall's modification , while Rob Van der Loo suggested the 3 pickup configuration on the Dbass. Great tones in each setting of the rotary (across board and across strings) while each setting has a great usable distinct tonal identity.
All with nice bottom end emphasis (nothing excessive or unusable).
Even though I am a 24 fret player, the tone and feel of this great bass made me want to (happily) stay where the money is made (nut, first positions and up to 9-12th fret)
I can think of using this bass in songs (pop rock blues reggae jazz Latin) rather than a solo flashy bass instrument
A great new bass from Sheldon Dingwall.
In short
Trademark Dingwall playability
Thick nice tone (with definition) across the range and settings
Perfect balance
Passive!!!
A great new take on a classic"
